Report of the Committee on Terminology.

Your Committee on Terminology begs t:o report that, owing to the con6itions arising out of the war, the work of the Committee has been practically suspended during the past year, but it is purpose4 now to continue it with vigor. Thus far four contributions to the subject have been. published, and, when the whole subject has been covered it is proposed that these be combined and published as an official glossary. Because of the increase4 cost of publica.tion and the reduced income of the Society due to loss of members to milit'ary service and for other reasons, it has been necessary to curtail the year's volume of the JOURNAL OF THE AMERI-CAN SOCIETY OF ACRoN0~V. Including the December number, the volumecon-sists of 360 pages, as compared with 432 pages printed in 1917 and' 400 pages printed in 1916. Not including the December number, the forms for which are not yet mad'e up, t:he 1918 volume has included, 41 papers by 55 authors, representing 19 States and the District of Columbia. This is on.e more paper than was included in the considerably larger volume of last year, showing a desirable tendency toward shorter papers. To illustrate these papers, 9 plates and 46 text figures have been used. The editing of the JOURNAL has been accomplished with con,si~erable dqfficulty, as the ed'itor has been either traveling or on emergency work outsid'e Wash-ington during all except two months during the year. It has often been d'ifficult to reach him promptly with papers for publication or with proof, an,d consequently the promptness and regularity of issuance of the JOURNAL has not been up to the desired standard. As a large agricultural library has not' ~sually been at han~, it has beet~ impossible to check many of the citations of literature, and therefore these have not always been as accurate or as uniform as could be wished. The editor has refrained from resigning only because he has felt t:hat others Who might do the work are as heavily load'ed with emergency duties and perhaps as badly handicapped as he. Necessarily, the size of the annual volume is dependent on the Society's income. It is hardly likely that printing costs will further increase, so that: if the present membership can be maintained, the 1919 volume should be at least as large as the one just published.
